The healing power of gratitude

Reiki, Reflexology, and Acupressure in San Antonio

Book Study: Living Life As A Thank You, by Nina Lesowitz and Mary Beth Sammons

I started a book study group in Meetup.com in approximately October 2010. So far, I have only had 3 book studies, and I had to cancel it because I was sick. The book study for March 2011 focuses on gratitude, and we are reading and discussing Living Life as a Thank You: The Transformative Power of Daily Gratitude by Nina Lesowitz and Mary Beth Sammons. If you haven’t read this delightful book, then I would recommend that you do so.

The book is 250 pages, and is very easy to read and understand. There are ten chapters, and each chapter has incredible stories that the authors compiled of people using gratitude to make their lives better, and change their perceptions about circumstances, which at first may seem negative or horrible, become positive blessings. The authors point out that many studies have been conducted and show that gratitude is an essential key for personal happiness. People who look at past events and see the positive in them and are grateful tend to be more satisfied in the present moment. As the authors suggest, “Gratitude promotes healing, harmony, peace, and joy. It encourages forgiveness, patience, and goodwill.”

There were so many statements and stories shared that resonated with me. One in particular is by Jenny Runkel, who had been diagnosed with lymphoma. Jenny is an avid Yoga practitioner, and it was through this health experience that she gained an appreciation for staying in the moment and appreciating small things, like being able to practice Yoga that day. And not only did she practice Yoga, she was more mindful and aware of how her breath felt, the thoughts she was thinking, how her body felt, and so forth. Having been an avid exerciser, she says that she didn’t feel like she got a good workout unless she was dripping sweat. And the focus of the exercise was always about her battle of the bulge or the war on fat. Since states that she now views exercise differently due to her experience, and that she is now more comfortable with her body and how it moves and feels.

There are so many ways we can show gratitude on a daily basis. The simple act of saying “Thank you” to someone as they hold the door open for you, or when a cashier gives you change when you are checking out are simple ways to incorporate gratitude into your life. Keeping a daily Gratitude Journal and writing things for which you are thankful is another great way to shift the focus. Even if you have had what seems like a bad day, there is always something we can be grateful for: a roof over our heads, the sun shinning in the sky, the rain for the grass and plants, or the pet who comes to snuggle with you while you fall asleep.

And the idea of Gratitude is a central part of Reiki practice and for practitioners. Just for Today, release anger and worry, be grateful for blessings, work hard, and be kind to yourself and others. I am grateful that I can practice Reiki on a daily basis on friends, family, and clients.

If you want to know weird but essential facts, ask Nick!

I thought that this would be a great book to review in conclusion of our HISTORY month here on Surviving a Teachers Salary! Random Obsessions: Trivia You Can't Live Without has certainly lived up to my expectations! This book has shown me a deeper appreciation for many things that I never stopped to think about. The author certainly has a way to bring out the strangness of past existence and many oddities along the way. This is one of those books that you love just picking up and flipping through the pages- always finding some unique piece of information to pass along to someone else you meet that day!

Some of the trivia is astounding, and others leave you wondering if it is really true. There is so much about history (and even modern day) that we don't even know! Just look at the maps from the 16th century till now- it's always changing! Does any one person really know exactly where all the borders in the world are placed? What about Tecumseh's death in 1812? The Native American tribes were at a very important time in US history- and yet no one can seem to agree on how he died or who killed him!

You'll learn more about 2 military men who deserted the Japanese army and went in hiding for over 60 years, the Egyptian theme which lays amongst our capital, the strange smoke in Roanoke, and tidbits about anything from puzzling ailments to dinosaurs! What about the live mosquitoes lost en route from London's Natural History Museum?

My favorite part of the book? ODD OCCUPATIONS! Yep- how would you like to be a dog treat taster? Or maybe a Fortune Cookie Fortune writer? A golf ball diver....a sheepskin factory worker...a salmon stunner....and many more interesting occupations can by found in this book!!

There are sections for odd trivia about movies, authors, art, even cannibals and weird places on Earth! I definitely recomend this book for anyone who enjoys the odd trivia! It is guaranteed to give you an interesting read and "wow" your friends with odd tidbits!

Leave it in the bathroom, sneak it in your office drawer, take it on an airplane- wherever you find the need for an interesting quirk of information- this book will certainly never let you down!

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post. I did receive a book to read.

How to be an expression of love in the world

Susyn Reeve

Susyn is the author of Choose Peace and Happiness and cofounder of SelfEsteemExpert.com and WithForgiveness.com.

If not now, when? ~ Mikhail Gorbachev

If today were my last day on Earth and I could share 500 words of brilliance with the world, here are the important things I'd want to pass along to others...

I apprenticed with don Miguel Ruiz many years ago. I repeatedly heard him say, "There are 10,000,000 ways to express your love." There was something about this statement that echoed through me and yet I didn't immediately explore what it actually meant in my daily life.

Then one morning while on a journey in Teotihuacan, Mexico, with don Miguel, I heard him repeat the words, "There are 10,000,000 ways to express your love." This time, rather than simply echoing through my mind, the words took up residence.

As I walked the grounds and climbed the pyramids of this sacred Aztec site my focus was first directed inward as I asked myself, 'What are the 10,000,000 ways to express love?' Some obvious ones popped into my mind: hugging, giving compliments, remembering special occasions of family and friends, making love...and then I had a thought: look around you all day today and see the ways people are expressing their love.

So my eyes focused outward with the clear instruction to notice and see what love looks like. Suddenly love was all around me. This is what I saw: someone holding a door open for someone else is an act of love, someone picking up a piece of rubbish from the ground is an act of love, someone sharing a snack with someone is an act of love...and the list went on and on.

And then I remembered something I had learned so many years earlier that every action we take has the potential to be an expression of love. It is the energy we embody, the way in which we view the world that determines whether or not we are expressing love. The same action can be love making or rape, savoring the flavors of a meal or gluttonously inhaling the very same meal never noticing the taste.

Each one of us decides if our thoughts, words and actions are expressions of love or not. When I remember that all beings are divine creations and that we are One then love flows. When I judge and separate as good or bad, or right or wrong, I place conditions on love. I love you but not you - and this thought stops the flow of love in my life.

Since returning home from that magical journey to Teotihuacan, I generally declare at the beginning of each day, 'Today I am the world's greatest lover. I express my love in all that I think, all that I say and all that I do.' Yes, there are days I forget and when I do turning my attention to being the world's greatest lover generally gets me right back on track!

Allow today to be the day you let your love flow and join me in being the world's greatest lover.
